The desert if full of older homes that still have the original windows. Some of these homes date from the 60’s or 70’s or even earlier and these windows are bare aluminum or single pane and are in need of updating. When ordering new windows, a homeowner can either custom order the size of his old windows or choose windows that are approximately the same size as his old ones. Sometimes a homeowner wants his new windows to be larger for more light.
Stucco is removed than is needed, the larger area has a better chance of flashing.
In the case of a different size window, the exterior opening must be changed to accommodate the newer window and this is where a mistake can be made. Here is an example of a recent window remodeling project where much more stucco was removed than was necessary to accommodate a new window.
Rather than remove a whole wall of stucco, it was only necessary to remove enough to accommodate the new window. When sizing for the new window, you only need to allow room to tie in black paper, wire and enough stucco to cover the window fins. This can be anywhere from 6 to 8 inches.
We Make Repair Exceptional.
When more stucco is removed than is needed, the larger area has a better chance of flashing and looking slightly different than the original stucco. Finishing stucco to match requires time and experience. Removing more than you need is only creating more work.
